Frequently Asked Questions

What is Besgnulinux?

It is a computer operating system based on Debian stable and developed to revive old computers and appeal to new users, with a JWM window manager.

What is the purpose of a lightweight distribution?

To bring old computers back to life with a session that does not use too many resources.

In this way, the old computer can either use it itself or offer it to those who are economically weak, depending on the owner's preference. Because thanks to the lightweight session, the old computer can actually make many people smile.

What do you mean by a lightweight session?

It means something that doesn't use a lot of resources but can do everything that is required of an operating system.

What kind of processes does it go through to make it a lightweight session?

Software that does not use too many resources but does its job well is added.

If there is no software with the desired efficiency, it is tried to be re-done.

As much as possible, elements that do not run in the background are preferred.

Instead of the desktop, the lighter window manager manages the system.

Leaking tools are tracked and removed from the system.

It is ensured that the user has more control.

As a result of the studies, care is taken not to exceed 250 MB of memory usage when the system is idle. However, as software develops, memory usage generally increases, so this situation may change in the process.

How many people are developing Besgnulinux?

I started in 2017, I am still working on developing it as a single person.

There were many applications to join, but although being a software developer and making distributions are related, they are very different. If there is someone who loves GNU/Linux, is a software developer and is talented in this field, I would of course gladly accept them.

Do you have your own repository?

No, but it's not really necessary, the Debian repository is fine.

Do you have a forum?

No, but the link below and this site can be used for problems, suggestions and solutions regarding Besgnulinux.

What is the main window manager of Besgnulinux?

The main window manager of Besgnulinux is JWM. However, Openbox and Icewm may also be included over time depending on demand.

Why Debian Stable?

I could never get the efficiency I wanted with the testing and sid base. I encountered problems more or less. Using the testing and sid base without any problems is up to chance. Since the Debian stable base is stable, even if a problem occurs, it can be easily fixed. The kernel factor is very important here. It would be more correct to use a stable kernel so that the kernel can adapt to all types of computers. For this reason, a stable kernel and a stable system structure will generally not upset users.

How long is the Besgnulinux version support period?

Besgnulinux is a fixed distribution. Each new version requires a reinstallation. You can easily transfer backups of your personal settings from the old version to the new one using tools like Timeshift and Grsync.

Furthermore, if you want to stay on the old version, because Besgnulinux is based on the Debian stable version, you can use each version for five years without any problems with regular updates. For example, if you want to stay in the old version, version 3-x is valid until 2030.

However, I always recommend the new version as bugs are fixed and new features are added in each new version.

Why is Brave the default instead of Firefox?

Brave browser uses around thirty percent less resources and is as useful as Firefox. For example, Firefox uses 700MB of memory on pages where Brave uses 500MB. Brave also emphasizes open source and security. As long as this average does not change, Brave will continue to be the default.

Why do you use Blogspot?

It requires a certain amount of cost to open a private site and develop the distribution. It is more attractive to run this business without the need for help from people. This is the main site of Besgnulinux https://sourceforge.net/projects/besgnulinux/. Blogspot is used as an external sharing site.

  1. Go ahead DADA. There is none a single active distro which use JWM. You are the pioneer in this category. Do more research with JWM. One day everybody will thank you to save the old computers.

  6. Best distro I have found so far for my 2009 ASUS laptop. I had tried 6 prior distros, this outperforms them all. Great job!

  8. It's a good Distro ! Also can Boot wiht Secure Boot activated ... a big +. But if I may have some humble observations: 1. still Touchpad to be configured is weird - yes there is touchegg package but I spent time to enable Tap to click / there is no GUI in settings for configure the touchpad ... is so hard to do it ? 2. Desktop / Task bar configurations - can't you implement for example JWMDesk ? ( as in Puppy Linux Bookworm .... ) 3. Yes - you put a CPU/Free RAM indicator in the taskbar - again I'm refering to Puppy Linux Bookworm ( to which I suggest to have an eye on it ... it is using JWM also ... ) - ok is useful, but what about CPU temperature ?! - like an ordinary user who I am and also using an old PC ( laptop ), most probably my CPU thermal paste dried :) - Puppy Linux has in the taskbar LXTask - just hover the mouse cursor and it's showing CPU usage , Free RAM, I/O wait: ... ( have no idea what is for :) ), and CPU Temperature ! 4. For an OLD PC( with CPU thermal paste dried ) don't you find useful an ( GUI ) app for reducing the CPU frequency - for example Puppy Linux Bookworm :)) has in menu an entry called "Wcpufreq" .... which fortunately for my CPU works ! in contrast with "cpupower-GUI" used with other Distros and ... not working... despite using the same hardware ( my poor old laptop fm. 2013 - ok upgraded with an SSD and to 12GB RAM / DDR 3, but able to run VMs ( Oracle Virtual Box ) , Puppy Linux Bookworm full install on SSD - no finger pain due to all time asking about ROOT Password , like other distros :) , very fast installing , JWM desktop - low load on hardware, but "shoot and pray" when installing other, than included into original distribution, apps fm Synaptic Package Manager :) 5. (UFW) Firewall is not enabled on startup ?! - like an ordinary user with no idea about firewall :) I just keep open the main door :)). Having said all of this, I wish you good health and keep up the good work in developing further of this distro. Regards

User preferences are important and decisive in the development of Besgnulinux. Thank you very much to everyone who participated in this mini-survey.
